Design and Screen : A New Form Factor with Google’s Pixel Fold

Google’s Pixel Fold offers same foldable experience, like other foldable phones in market.

It functions as a compact 5.8-inch smartphone that unfolds into a 7.6-inch tablet, thanks to its flexible OLED screen and robust hinge mechanism.

One thing to note here is the Pixel Fold completely closes without any gap in the middle of the screen . This is due to the new Hinge mechanism which Google is calling Fluid Friction Hinge.

Both of the Pixel Fold’s screens are OLED panels with 120Hz refresh rates. The outside screen offers a resolution of 1080 x 2092 pixels with a peak brightness of 1550 nits, while the inner display features a 2208 x 1840 pixel resolution, reaching up to 1450 nits of brightness, ensuring usability in outdoor settings.

Processor and Storage

The Pixel Fold’s hardware is powered by Google’s Tensor 2 processor (found in the Pixel 7, 7 Pro, and the just-announced Pixel 7A and Pixel Tablet), the device also houses 12GB of RAM, ensuring smooth performance. Storage options include 256GB or 512GB, but note that there is no option for expansion.

Pixel Fold: Camera

The Pixel Fold has five cameras. That’s a handful. Starting with back of the phone which, there is triple camera setup. The back features a 48-megapixel optically-stabilized main camera, a 10.8-megapixel ultrawide, and a 10.8-megapixel 5x telephoto lens.

On the front when in tablet mode there is 9.5 MP camera for meetings and video calls. Also, the wide tablet screen helps with those wide selfies. When the phone is folded into normal smartphone mode. The camera on front screen is 8 MP.

The back camera setup bears similarities to the Pixel 7 Pro, but different sensors are used keeping in mind the constraints of Fold’s slim frame.

Battery : Should have been more

While Google claims the Pixel Fold’s dual-cell 4,800mAh battery can provide “beyond 24 hours” of usage. The battery capacity for real world usage may not be sufficient.

The 4,800 mAh battery in Fold is even less than Pixel 7 Pro which has 5,000 mAh. Add in to this Pixel Fold has to power two screens.

Same thing was pointed by Youtuber Mrwhosetheboss in his video of Pixel Fold. Overall Battery life might be a problem on this one. but , we will have to see for actual real world usage reviews.

Fast charging of up to 30W is supported, as well as wireless charging via a standard Qi charger. However, neither charger is included with the device.
