Woah! World’s first 2TB microSD card is here: Kioxia Exceria Plus G2

Who runs the world – Data. Now, in the world of digital storage, a new milestone has been achieved. Kioxia, a relatively lesser known brand than Samsung or Sandisk, has just announced the launch of the world’s first 2TB microSD card – the Exceria Plus G2 2TB.

Exceria Plus G2 2TB: Specs

EXCERIA PLUS G2 provides read speeds up to 100MB/s and write speeds up to 90MB/s. This puts it in UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) and Video Speed Class 30 (V30) categories, suitable for 4K and high-speed video recording.

According to KIOXIA, it has managed to stack sixteen 1 terabit dies of 3D NAND flash memory into a microSD card, for context, 16 Terabits(Tb) = 2 Terabytes (TB). All this while maintaining the form factor specification of less than 0.8mm thick.

The EXCERIA PLUS G2, a 2TB microSDXC card, uses a proprietary 3D flash memory technology (BiCS FLASH), which it developed in partnership with WD.

Why the Exceria Plus G2 2TB Matters:

The implications of a 2TB microSD card are vast. The company says its 2TB capacity will allow users to record over 41 hours of continuous 1080p video on a single card.

This makes the card great for use in for action cameras, drones, and other devices requiring high-capacity removable storage.

I wish smartphone manufacturers had not stopped having microSD card slots in smartphones.

The Market and Competitors

While Kioxia has claimed this laurel, it’s essential to recognize the context. Competitors like Samsung and Sandisk have yet to release a 2TB microSD card. The current market offers up to 1.5TB from brands like Micron, albeit at a steep price above USD 450.

There are several Cheap Chinese listings of fake 2TB listings microSD cards on Amazon and AliExpress. But mostly, they are non-verified and often misrepresent storage capacities.

In comparison, Samsung updated its PRO Plus memory card lineup in April. The updated lineup is available in microSD and SD variants, with up to 180MB/s read and 130MB/s write speeds increased by 12% and 8%, respectively, compared to outgoing models.

What about Kioxia?

Kioxia, formerly known as Toshiba Memory Corporation, might be a newer name in the memory market, having been established in 2018. But it carries a legacy of innovation and quality from its Toshiba days.

This 2TB microSD coming from Kioxia, which is a known reputable brand, ensures the quality and reliability.

The company’s latest offering, the Exceria Plus G2 2TB, is a testament to its commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology.

The new 2TB EXCERIA PLUS G2 microSD cards will be available next quarter, which is Q1 2024.

As Kioxia’s Exceria Plus G2 2TB microSD card prepares to hit the markets in Europe and Singapore first then the other markets, considering that the brand has published press releases regarding the product in Europe and Singapore.
