UFS 5.0 is announced – doubling the performance over previous generation

JEDEC, or the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council, has just announced the latest version of UFS memory interface that will be powering our future smartphones. The latest version is Universal Flash Storage (UFS) standard: UFS 5.0. The current latest version is UFS 4.1

According to JEDEC, the UFS 5.0 storage standard is now finalized and manufacturers will soon be able to start production.

UFS is a system that makes flash memory in your devices like smartphones, tablets faster with lower power consumption.

Check out this detailed guide on UFS storage – here

UFS versions – UFS 1.0, UFS 1.1, UFS 2.0, UFS 2.1, UFS 3.0, UFS 3.1 (Being used currently) and UFS 4.0/UFS4.1 (Used in current latest flagship smartphones)

Coming to latest version of UFS – UFS 5.0

UFS 5.0 plans to deliver faster data access and improved performance compared to its predecessor, while maintaining compatibility with UFS 4.x hardware.

  • Increased sequential performance up to 10.8 GB/s – For context, the current UFS 4.0 and 4.1 standards offer up to 5.8 GB/s bandwidth
  • Integrated link equalization for more reliable signal integrity –
  • Distinct power supply rail to provide noise isolation between PHY and memory subsystem, easing system integration- Improves reliability of storage memory
  • Inline Hashing for greater security – better security for data stored in memory

The UFS 5.0 storage will be backwards compatible with hardware initially designed for UFS 4.x. This means smartphone companies like Samsung, OnePlus etc will not have any issue in implementing UFS 5.0 in their new devices.

The latest standard focuses on improving performance and energy efficiency for AI systems, mobile devices and edge computing. The GenAI and AI models which are rapidly being adopted in smartphones will definitely see big boost

JEDEC hasn’t given a clear release timeline, so we will have to wait until manufacturers start implementing the new standard.
