Intel confirms upcoming 14th Gen refresh, New Naming is confusing?

It looks like the Intel 14th gen refresh is coming after all. Intel has officially confirmed the imminent arrival of their upcoming 14th Gen Raptor Lake-S “Desktop” and Raptor Lake-HX “Laptop” CPU refreshes.

Alongside this, Intel informed the Raptor Lake-U and Meteor Lake-P mobile chips will now be part of the new “Core” & “Core Ultra” 1st-Gen branding without the “i”. The new branding change was announced by Intel recently.

The announcement was made via Intel China’s Weibo handle, providing clarity on the latest iteration of the chip giant’s product lineup.

The new Naming Convention made confusing?

As part of the revelation, Intel China clarified its decision to continue with the 14th Gen nomenclature for the Raptor Lake-S and Raptor Lake-HX CPU refreshes.

Previously, leaks had suggested the same, that the Raptor Lake-S and Raptor Lake-HX refreshes would form part of the 14th Gen CPU family.

While high-end desktop and laptop refresh chips will now be part of the 14th-Gen label.

The Raptor Lake-U and Meteor Lake-P chips on the mobile side will be the first to usher in the brand new “Core” & “Core Ultra” 1st-Gen branding.

Intel aims to help users better understand the new branding and naming convention being adopted by the tech powerhouse.

Intel’s official disclosure of the 14th Gen Raptor Lake-S “Desktop” and Raptor Lake-HX “Laptop” refresh CPUs clears up any uncertainty surrounding these products.

According to the provided information, these CPUs will serve as a significant upgrade over the current generation of chips.

The advent of the “Core Ultra” branding gives consumers a way to distinguish between the Meteor Lake & Raptor-Lake U Refresh CPUs, which are set to be released under just “Core” branding. The term “Ultra” is indicative of high performance and will be exclusive to the superior Meteor Lake series.

Intel also tried further clarifying the situation by answering questions around branding change and upcoming launches.

Future Releases

The new naming convention will take effect across all client products, including Raptor Lake-S desktops and Raptor Lake/Meteor Lake mobile CPUs, starting from the second half of 2023.

However, the Meteor Lake CPU family will be the first to adopt this updated scheme. Intel’s Raptor Lake-S Refresh Desktop CPUs are slated to hit the retail market in October 2023, marking another significant milestone in the company’s relentless pursuit of technological advancement.
