1440p gaming is increasingly becoming more popular. Well, there aren’t a lot of laptops that offer 1440p or QHD displays. But considering that you have a QHD display or using an external monitor, which is the best laptop GPU for 1440p gaming?

Just to put into perspective 1440p has 77% more pixels to deal with compared to 1080p and that naturally means you need more graphical power and also more VRAM. Let’s see which laptop GPU is the best to handle these extra pixels.

RTX 3070 is the best laptop GPU for 1440p, that doesn’t break the bank

Nvidia is ruling the laptop GPU space and for good reason. They are fast and they are good value for the money, especially for 1440p and 4k gaming.

Quick Specs

  • Architecture: Ampere
  • Clock Speed: 1110 MHz to 1560MHz
  • Memory: 8GB GDDR6
  • Memory Bus: 256 bit
  • TDP: 85W to 125W

There are quite a few laptops in India that come with RTX 3070, both with 1080p display and 1440p display. What makes laptop RTX 3070 perfect for 1440p? Priceto-performance.

For most titles, RTX 3070 manages to run at 60fps at the highest settings. Some AAA titles like Cyberpunk 2077 or Control which are very demanding may need some boost from DLSS. But, for the most part, 1440p gaming is enjoyable with RTX 3070 laptops.

RTX 3070 laptops start from as low as ₹1,10,000 which is the MSI Pulse GL66. It has less TDP and as a result, is cheaper but sacrifices some performance. A good RTX 3070 laptop is usually in the range of 1.5 lac to 1.8 lac ($1800 to $2000) with the latest Intel 12th gen processors.

Here are some benchmark numbers for a full-powered RTX 3070 laptop. Note: It may vary a little depending on the laptop. Check this laptop buying guide for more help.

AMD RX 6800M and RX 6700M are good 1440p options but there are hardly any laptops

AMD laptop GPUs are relatively cheaper than their Nvidia counterparts and there is another laptop GPU that is apt for 1440p but it has the same problem of less choice. Asus ROG Strix is the laptop that has RX 6800M in it.

Although RX 6800M is supposed to be in competition with RTX 3080 laptops, RX 6800M is priced on the same tier as RTX 3070 laptops (cheaper in some cases too)

RX 6800M has a larger 12GB memory but it is not needed for 1440p gaming even in modern titles. RX 6800M is faster than RTX 3070 but the gap closes at 1440p resolution. Even if performance is considered the same, RX 6800M is cheaper than RTX 3070 which makes it an overall better value.

If you are to choose between two laptops with 3070 and 6800M at the same price, RX 6800M will provide you with more value for the money.

As for RX 6700M, there is only a laptop worth mentioning and that is the MSI Delta 15. It is powered by Ryzen 9 5900HX and 135W (max TDP) RTX 3070.

RTX 3070 laptop GPU is about 10% ahead of RX 6700M on average but it might depend on the games you play. It is not a bad show of performance by any means but RTX 3070 simply has more options.

GPU is not the only parameter to buying a laptop and having options is a good thing. Nevertheless, if only GPU power is considered, RX 6700M can also be a good option, especially for the 1.2lac price tag.

Is 1440p gaming worth it?

Yes, more and more people are shifting to 1440p due to the displays becoming cheaper and the performance leaps in hardware. Even a mid-range RTX 3060 laptop GPU can play games at 1440p.

Upscaling technologies like DLSS and FSR are also helping people with less powerful hardware to jump on higher resolution 1440p gaming.

Is it better to game at 1080p or 1440p?

For gaming, 1440p is superior to 1080p. Everything just looks much nicer and with more details. However, because 1440p has a higher pixel count than 1080p.

Your graphics card will be working with more pixels. This means that performance will suffer as a result, leaving you with a lower frame rate, as with 1080p.
