Design and Build

Thinner and Lighter Profiles with all new Aluminium build

The 2024 versions of the Zephyrus G16 and G14 have undergone a remarkable transformation in terms of design. They are noticeably thinner and lighter compared to their predecessors.

The G14, in particular, is almost half the thickness of the previous model. This reduction in bulk has not compromised their structural integrity; the laptops still maintain a robust build.

The Zephyrus G14 is 1.59 cm thick and only 1.5 kg, while the larger Zephyrus G16 is just 1.49 cm thick and weighs in at just 1.85 kg

Both machines boast all-new and all-aluminum CNC-machined chassis, leading to overall weight reduction, increased structural rigidity, and increased chassis space.

The new chassis feels more premium, deviating from the slightly plasticky feel of the earlier models. The lid flex is minimal, and the overall tactile experience is enhanced.

Aesthetic Enhancements

Asus has opted for a more subtle and sophisticated design, moving away from the flashy “AniMe Matrix” LED display on the G14’s lid. The new models feature a minimalist slash with mini LED lights. This Slash Lighting array follows a diagonal across the lid of the machines, with animated sequences and the ability to fully customize a unique pattern. The new slash lighting is on point, adding character without being too flashy.

The laptops sport a brand-new LED lighting array on the lid. This Slash Lighting array follows a diagonal across the lid of the machines, with animated sequences and the ability to fully customize a unique pattern, allowing users to ensure they never blend in with the crowd.

Performance

AMD 8000 in G14 and G16 gets Intel Core Ultra

The G14 sticks with AMD processors, topping with the Ryzen 98945 HS, while the G16 is powered by Intel, going up to a Core Ultra 9. The G14’s GPU options cap at the RTX 4070, a strategic choice considering the chassis size. In contrast, the G16 offers more powerful options like the RTX 4080 and 4090.

No more RAM upgrade

Both models come with maximum of 32GB RAM support which are soldered. This is also one notable downside limiting upgradeability. This design choice might deter users who prefer the flexibility of upgrading their hardware.

Asus definitely should have given G16 with AMD options as well. As, I like my laptops to have best of Nvidia and best of AMD while not worrying about battery life 😛 Intel.

The AI additions

The new 2024 ROG Zephyrus G series have a dedicated AI support for tools like Omniverse® and Stable Diffusion. Omniverse is Asus offering of AI image generation tool, which runs locally on your laptop. While the quality of images, generated will not at par with premium AI tools. But you are getting the capabilities of local image generation being offline while being secure and private with your data.

Video-editing and 3D-rendering projects are also more than twice as fast with AI acceleration, all while consuming less power for longer battery life.

Thermal Management

The G16 features a vapor chamber cooling system for higher GPU variants. The G14, with a maximum of RTX 4070, doesn’t require such extensive cooling but includes a third fan to enhance airflow.

Display Quality

Both the new models boast ROG Nebula Display OLED panels with exceptional color accuracy and brightness. The G14’s 2880 x 1800 resolution at 120Hz is a visual treat, while the G16 offers a lower 2560 x 1600 resolution but compensates with a 240Hz refresh rate.

The displays also boast 100% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space and a Delta E accuracy of less than 1, making these panels equally capable as the primary screen for content creators. Plus, the display is fast with 0.2 ms response time, so gaming experience improves further.

User Experience

Keyboard and Trackpad

The new design has enabled for edge-to-edge keyboard design, the Zephyrus G14 and G16 also come with larger individual keycaps and a larger touchpad, for a better typing, precision scrolling, and fluid gaming.

The trackpads are spacious, with the G16 having a larger one due to its size.

Audio and Battery Life

Both laptops have six-speaker setups, delivering superior sound quality compared to their predecessors. The speakers are 25% larger than the previous generation, with a 47% volume increase. Zephyrus G series audio has been one of its plus features and now Asus has further improved it, making it one of the best in the market. Comparable to even MacBook Pro audio.

Battery life is respectable, with the G14 lasting about 8 hours on a single charge.

Port Selection and Storage

The port lineup remains versatile, accommodating most connectivity needs. Internal storage options are generous, with the G16 offering an additional slot for expansion.

The laptop charging connector is changed from barrel connector to more of flat shape this time.

Overall Impression

Despite the RAM limitation, the Zephyrus G16 and G14 are impressive in their design evolution, display quality, and overall performance. They are suitable for gamers and professionals alike, seeking a balance of power and portability.

I like this new approach of Asus taking core gaming products and slightly tuning them into more welcoming design for general users as well. The new 2024 Zephyrus G series having more subtle, minimalist premium look coming near the vicinity of premium looking Dell XPS 14 and XPS 16 which were also refreshed for 2024.

Asus adopted the same strategy with their latest ROG phone 8 series, giving them a more subtle look as compared to hardcore gamer vibes.

The decision to purchase should be weighed against the need for the latest design and features versus the adequacy of previous models. With the anticipated arrival of retail units, a more detailed assessment will follow, potentially solidifying these models as top contenders in the gaming laptop market of 2024.
