New S9 SiP processor
The Apple Watch Series 9 is powered by the new S9 SiP, which offers significant performance and capability improvements over the previous generation. This means faster app launches, smoother animations, and better battery life.
New double-tap gesture
The Apple Watch Series 9 introduces a new double-tap gesture that allows users to quickly and easily access frequently used apps or features. For example, users can double-tap the side button to activate Siri or double-tap the display to start a workout.
You can also use double tap to stop a timer, play and pause music, snooze an alarm, answer and end a phone call, or take a photo. You can also use a double tap to open the Smart Stack from the watch face and scroll through widgets in the stack.
The 4-core Neural Engine in the chip uses data from the accelerometer, gyroscope, and optical heart sensor to detect the unique signature of tiny wrist movements and changes in blood flow when you double tap. This software update will be available a little later.
Brighter display up to 2000 nits
The Apple Watch Series 9 features a brighter display that makes it easier to see in all lighting conditions. This is especially helpful for outdoor activities or when using the watch in low-light environments. The peak brightness can reach 2000 nits which is much higher than in the Apple Watch Series 8.
Faster on-device Siri
The Apple Watch Series 9 also features a faster on-device Siri, which can now access and log health data. This means that users can get more accurate and personalized insights from their health data without having to rely on their iPhones.
Precision Finding for iPhone
Now, the new S9 SiP includes a second-generation Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip, which enables Precision Finding for iPhone 15 models. Precision Finding provides distance and direction, as well as visual, haptic, and audio guidance to a misplaced iPhone, even if it’s in another room.
This feature is especially helpful when the iPhone is in a difficult-to-reach location, such as under a couch or in a crowded room.
