MediaTek’s upcoming Dimensity 9400 chipset, set to be mass-produced using TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process, is rumored to come with a higher price tag. According to a tipster, this increase is due to the adoption of advanced manufacturing technology, but it will also bring substantial improvements.
The most notable enhancement in the Dimensity 9400 is a 40% increase in Neural Processing Unit (NPU) performance compared to its predecessor, the Dimensity 9300. This information comes from the reliable tipster Digital Chat Station, who shared insights on Weibo. The tipster did not specify the exact price hike but mentioned that upcoming flagships like the Vivo X200 would see a rise in cost.

Improvements in the Dimensity 9400
The Dimensity 9400 will introduce several key advantages, particularly in power efficiency and AI performance. The NPU upgrade is expected to be a standout feature, promising a significant leap in AI capabilities.
Interestingly, the tipster did not comment on the overall raw performance of the Dimensity 9400, suggesting that it might not differ markedly from its predecessor, the Dimensity 9300. However, this is hard to believe given the rumored architectural changes.
The Dimensity 9400 is expected to lack efficiency cores, relying solely on performance cores, which should substantially boost both single-core and multi-core performance. The chipset is also rumored to adopt ARM’s ‘BlackHawk’ CPU architecture, though the real-world benefits of these cores remain to be seen.

The Dimensity 9400 is speculated to have a significantly larger die size, measuring around 150mm² and containing 30 billion transistors. This increase in physical size will likely contribute to higher production costs but will also allow for a larger cache and an upgraded NPU. If true, MediaTek might release the world’s largest smartphone silicon in terms of physical size.
Dimensity 9400 price increase
Despite the potential cost increase, MediaTek’s CEO Rick Tsai is optimistic about the Dimensity 9400’s impact on the market. Tsai believes that the launch of this chipset could lead to a 50% annual revenue increase for the company.
He has also hinted at an announcement in October, suggesting that the Dimensity 9400 might be priced competitively to undercut Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. This competitive pricing could make the Dimensity 9400 an attractive option for smartphone manufacturers, encouraging long-term partnerships with MediaTek.
