Even after 4 years since the launch of the Ryzen 5000 series, AMD has expanded its lineup with two new processors: the Ryzen 9 5900XT and the Ryzen 7 5800XT. This announcement was made at Computex 2024 in Taipei, continuing AMD’s commitment to its AM4 platform, even as it develops the newer AM5 socket.
Ryzen 9 5900XT
The Ryzen 9 5900XT is a 16-core, 32-thread processor with a maximum boost clock of 4.8 GHz. It features a 105W TDP, similar to its predecessor, the Ryzen 9 5950X, and clock speed that is 100 MHz lower than the top-tier Ryzen 9 5950X
This new addition aims to deliver exceptional performance for both gaming and productivity tasks, offering a competitive alternative to Intel’s Core i7-13700K.
AMD has priced the Ryzen 9 5900XT at $349, making it a more affordable option compared to other Ryzen 9 processors which launched at higher price points.

Ryzen 7 5800XT
The Ryzen 7 5800XT, with its 8 cores and 16 threads, offers a boost clock of 4.8 GHz, a 100 MHz improvement over the Ryzen 7 5800X. It also maintains a 105W TDP and is priced at $249.
This makes it a cost-effective upgrade for gamers looking to upgrade from their Ryzen 3000 series processors on the same motherboard. This provides a great opportunity for many older AM4 systems to upgrade without spending much.
AMD highlights that this processor can handle demanding games and applications, making it a solid choice for mid-range gaming rigs.

Continuing the legacy of AM4 platform
Both new processors are designed to be compatible with existing AM4 motherboards, though users may need to perform firmware updates to ensure optimal performance.
This is the best part of choosing AMD providing the users with a very long upgrade path on the same platform. We can expect AMD to do the same with the newer AM5 platform. This move is particularly beneficial for users who have not yet transitioned to the newer AM5 platform and still seek significant performance improvements.
The release of the Ryzen 5000XT series comes at a time when AMD is also gearing up to launch its Ryzen 9000 series on the AM5 socket. Despite this, AMD has chosen to continue supporting the older AM4 platform, which was introduced in 2016.
