Moving onto the actual devices.

Design and Display : New Flex Display, New Hinge mechanism and more durable

The 5th generation of the Z series brings significant changes with an all-new Hinge Mechanism called “The Flex Hinge”. The key component, the integrated hinge module, features a dual rail structure, diffusing external impacts and offering an impressive level of resilience.

Contrary to the recently launched Pixel Fold hinge mechanism which is not liked by everyone.

The new hinge mechanism from Samsung is much smoother the previous version and the fold crease is almost gone.

The new foldable devices also have an enhanced screen durability. The screens are now equipped with a shock dispersion layer, Armor Aluminum frames, and Corning Gorilla Glass Vitus 4. Furthermore, both models have been certified for IPX83 support, suggesting they should resist damage from dust and splashes.

Galaxy Flip5

The Galaxy Z Flip5 has a new Flex Window, a whopping 3.78 times larger than the previous generation. Users can make the most of this additional screen real estate with widgets and quick settings that are accessible without opening the device.

The Flex Window also allows users to view and edit shots quickly, switch between widgets, check notifications, and control music playback, all without ever opening the device.

This Flex Window can even sync with the design of your Galaxy Watch6 series – a subtle, yet thoughtful integration.

The Z Flip5, lets you take better high-quality selfies with the rear camera thanks to a larger Flex Window. The FlexCam allows users to take pictures from various creative angles, all while providing the smoothness of camera-stabilizing Super Steady, and the inclusivity of Auto Framing.

The main Screen has 6.7-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X, 120Hz adaptive refresh rate

The new Flipsuit Case offers device protection and more personalization options, adding a touch of flair to this compact marvel.

Samsung Galaxy Fold5

The Galaxy Z Fold5 features a 7.6-inch Main Screen, upping the ante with a 30% increase in peak brightness up to 1750 nits.

Performance

Samsung has equipped the phones with the powerful Snapdragon® 8 Gen 2 chip, making both Flip5 and Fold5 snappy performers.

With features like the improved Taskbar and enhanced two-handed drag and drop, users can switch between frequently used apps and move content between apps and screens more efficiently.

Fold5

Plus, with its advanced cooling system, the Fold5 can comfortably handle marathon gaming sessions with less lag and no drop in performance.

The S Pen Fold Edition, which debuted in 2021, has been fine-tuned to deliver a superior writing experience on the Fold5. It is now slimmer and more compact.

The Slim S Pen Case is nearly the same thickness as a regular case for the Fold and available in a variety of styles and colors.

Camera and Optics – Not significant but better refined

In terms of camera hardware, there are no significant changes but both, Galaxy Z Flip5 and Fold5 does take advantage of AI enhancements done by Samsung including optimizing photos and videos in low-light conditions.

Flip5

The FlexCam feature enables hands-free photos from creative angles, while the AI solution optimizes low-light photos and videos. Samsung has also included digital 10X zoom for more detailed shots.

Pricing and availability :A Premium Price Tag

The Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 are still on the pricier end of the spectrum, available for pre-order from July 26.

The Flip5 comes in colors including Mint, Graphite, Cream, and Lavender, and the Fold5 in Icy Blue, Phantom Black, and Cream.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 continue to be premium offerings, with a starting price of $1,000 and $1,800, respectively. This pricing is the same as previous versions.

Samsung’s new foldable devices indeed offer an unrivaled experience. However, their price tags remain a sticking point for some potential buyers. But given the lack of competition in the foldable smartphone market, it seems Samsung is confident these innovations justify the premium.

Samsung is offering four generations of OS upgrades and five years of security updates, aiming to extend the product lifecycle and ensure their devices remain a value-for-money proposition.

As Samsung continues to dominate this niche market segment, we can only hope for more competition, which might lead to lower prices in the future.
