From Ryzen mobile processors to 3 new 3D V-cache desktop processors: AMD at CES 2023

AMD Ryzen 7040 series

Post the acquisition of Xilinx, AMD has announced AMD XDNA architecture, which will be an AI accelerator that will be integrated into mobile processors. Following this, AMD has announced its first Zen 4 mobile processor, Ryzen 7040 series.

The Ryzen 7040 series, being dubbed as the world’s fastest ultrathin processor, will feature RDNA3 integrated graphics, Ryzen AI and 15-45W of TDP. The Ryzen AI will be the on-chip dedicated AI engine (thanks to Xilinx) and these processors will have up to 8 cores, 16-threads and a boost clock up to 5.2GHz.

Comparing the AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS to Intel i7-1280P and Apple M2, both ultra-thin notebook chips, AMD claims up to 34% more performance in Cinebench compared to Intel and up to 21% faster in gaming compared to Intel.

Comparing the dedicated AI Engine, AMD claims that it is up to 20% faster than Apple M2 in MobileNet v2.

AMD also claims that the Ryzen 7040 series will enable more than 30 hours of battery life owing to its efficiency.

The first laptops with Ryzen 7040 series will start shipping in March 2023 and there will be over 250 laptop models using the Ryzen 7040 series. HP also announced its laptop targeting freelancers which will use Ryzen 7040 series.

Mobile Processors for Gaming – Ryzen 7045HX Series

The Ryzen 7045HX series will be aimed at gaming and high-performance laptops with a TDP of over 55W. It uses Zen 4 architecture and multi-chip design for processors and is based on 5nm technology, as opposed to the 4nm used in Zen 4 chips.

The Ryzen 7045HX series will feature processors with up to 16 cores, 32-threads and a boost clock of up to 5.4GHz. The integrated graphics will be based on RDNA2 and these processors will have up to 80MB of L2+L3 cache.

Performance-wise, AMD claims that it will be faster than its previous gen Ryzen 9 6900HX by an average of 24% in 1080p gaming. Talking about the production workloads, Ryzen 9 7945HX will be faster than Intel i9-12900HX in Cinebench Multi-core by 52% and 75% faster in Blender.

Radeon RX 7000 series for laptops

Talking about the gaming side of things, AMD has announced its first RDNA3 mobile graphics starting with RX 7600M XT. 

The Radeon RX 7600M XT will feature 32 RDNA3 Compute Units, 8GB GDDR6 memory, 128-bit memory bus with a TDP of 75W to 120W. The RDNA3 mobile graphics will be built on the 6nm process.

Compared to the RTX 3060 laptop GPU, the RX 7600M XT is about 24% faster in some of the major titles like Metro Exodus, Cyberpunk 2077 and Witcher 3 at 1080p.

AMD also confirmed the various laptops that will feature the 7600M XT and will start rolling out in February 2023. Many laptops like Asus ROG Strix, Asus TUF Gaming A16, Dell Alienware m18 and m16 have already announced their line of laptops.

Asus TUF Gaming A16 will feature AMD Advantage which will use an AMD processor and GPU for its laptop.

Lenovo also teased their Legion Pro Series laptops which will use the AMD Ryzen 7945HX processor. This will be later unveiled by Lenovo soon.

Ryzen 7 7800X3D announced at CES 2023

The previous generation Ryzen 7 5800X3D was an instant hit because of its improved gaming performance with the help of 3D V-cache. We were eagerly waiting for a 3D V-cache version for Ryzen Zen 4 processor, owing to the mediocre performance of flagship Zen 4 processors launched in November last year.

AMD has announced the Ryzen 7 7800X3D with Zen 4 architecture and will be based on a 5nm process. It will feature 8 cores, and 16 threads and will have up to a 5.0 GHz boost clock. It will feature a 104MB L2+L3 cache and will operate with a TDP of 120W.

Talking about performance, AMD claims that Ryzen 7800X3D will deliver 15% more performance compared to the Ryzen 7 5800X3D at 1080p.

AMD is also bringing 3D V-cache to the Ryzen 9

AMD also announced the Ryzen 9 7950X3D which will be a 16-core, 32-thread processor with 144MB of L2+L3 cache. It will feature a boost clock of up to 5.7 GHz and operate at a TDP of 120W.

Speaking on the performance, AMD claims that Ryzen 9 7950X3D will be around 15% faster on average in 1080p gaming compared to the fastest Intel processor, i9-13900K.

There will also be a Ryzen 9 7900X3D which will be a 12-core, 24-thread processor with 140MB of L2+L3 cache. It will feature a boost clock of up to 5.6 GHz and operate at a TDP of 120W.

These processors will be available in February 2023 along with new low-powered Ryzen processors and entry-level AM5 motherboards for Zen 4 processors.

While AMD did not explicitly announce the non-X 7000 series processors, all the specifications for these processors are out on the AMD website and reports were already out with the pricing and specifications of these processors.

The low-powered processors will operate at a TDP of 65W and will include Ryzen 5 7600, Ryzen 7 7700 and Ryzen 9 7900. These processors will be available to purchase starting January 10, 2023.
