Your bike might be affecting your iPhone cameras

“Exposing your iPhone to high amplitude vibrations within certain frequency ranges, specifically those generated by high-power motorcycle engines, can degrade the performance of the camera system.” Apple has said.

Apple put out a warning recently on its support page about attaching iPhones to powerful bikes.

iPhone camera helps you take studio-quality pictures because of its advanced camera systems. iPhone camera uses technology such as optical image stabilization (OIS) and closed-looped autofocus. These technologies help you take great pictures even if your hands are shaky.

These systems counteract the changes due to movement, vibrations, and effects of gravity and lets you take great pictures.

Although OIS and closed-loop Autofocus systems are built and designed for durability, vibrations within certain frequency ranges, from the high powered motorbikes can degrade the performance ability of these advanced systems.

Using mounts on your bikes for navigation which is done quite commonly now can result in poor camera performance if you own an iPhone which uses these systems.

So is it safe if have a scooter or an electric bike?

Apple also clarified that while small-volume bikes or mopeds also generate comparatively lower-amplitude vibrations and it is recommended to use vibration damping mounts to reduce the risk of damaging these advanced systems in the camera.

Which iPhone carries OIS and closed-loop AF system?

OIS is available on iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7 and all the later models, also including iPhone SE (2nd gen).

Closed-loop AF is available on iPhone XS and later models and also including iPhone SE (2nd gen).

Many mounts are sold in the market which claims that it is designed for iPhones and in reality, many of these do not come with proper anti-vibration mounting design. It’s better not to attach your phone to high-powered bikes and use a good anti-vibration mount on low-powered motorbikes.
