Sony has officially unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro, which will launch on November 7, 2024. The mid-generation upgrade promises significant improvements in performance, catering to gamers seeking a higher level of graphical fidelity and faster gameplay.
PS5 Pro Performance Improvements
The enhancements in PS5 Pro performance mainly come from three aspects – bigger and better GPU, better ray tracing, and resolution scaling.
According to Sony, PS5 Pro has a 45% faster rendering performance, largely due to the inclusion of a more powerful GPU featuring 60 compute units (CU) and 28% faster RAM. This increased processing power supports advanced ray tracing, allowing light reflection and refraction to happen at double or even triple the speed seen in the original PS5.
The PS5 Pro comes equipped with a 2TB SSD, doubling the storage capacity of the base model, which had a maximum of 825GB.
PS5 Pro: PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution
Moreover, the PS5 Pro introduces PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an AI-driven upscaling technology that enhances image clarity without requiring native 4K rendering, similar to NVIDIA’s DLSS.
As shown during the presentation, PS5 Pro is now capable of running games at 60fps with Fidelity mode and has more details at relatively higher resolution. The presentation showed Last of Us Part 2 running at 60fps on PS5 Pro while on PS5, it runs at 30fps.
The difference isn’t only in the frames, there is a substantial difference in image quality and resolution as well. Even in Performance mode, the PS5 Pro has significantly better image quality, draw distances, and ray tracing, compared to PS5 Performance mode.
PS5 Pro Improvements
One of the headline features is the console’s support for WiFi 7, ensuring faster and more stable internet connectivity, which is ideal for online gaming and streaming. Additionally, the PS5 Pro can handle 8K gaming (with PSRR of course) and VRR (variable refresh rate), offering a smoother and more immersive gaming experience.
Games optimized for the new console will carry the “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label. Confirmed titles include:
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered
- Alan Wake 2
- Assassin’s Creed: Shadows
- Demon’s Souls
- Dragon’s Dogma 2
- Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
- Gran Turismo 7
- Hogwarts Legacy
- Horizon Forbidden West

- Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
