The first one is always what makes the most headlines. We all know iPhone was the first superstar smartphone. It was all the rage and craze back then. Eventually, other smartphones vendors caught up with Apple.
Now we have modern-day smartphones where almost all top smartphones are somewhat offer experiences.
Now, coming back to original iPhone launched in 2007. 15 years back. What would you pay for it now?
Someone has literally paid $39000 or ₹ 33 lakhs for an untouched, sealed box, original iPhone launched in 2007. This is almost 65 times the original price it was launched at, which as $599.
The iPhone was sold at an auction organized by LCG Auctions
For the reminder, the specs of the phone are 8 GB of storage, 3.5-inch touchscreen (yeah it was a big feature back then), a 2-megapixel camera, and a web browser. In addition to iconic, preloaded 12 apps.
“This factory sealed, first-release example is in exceptional condition,”
“Virtually flawless along the surface and edges, the factory seal is clean with correct seam details and tightness.” – the auction listing page read.
You would be asking why would someone pay this much amount? It’s all about the significance, the value, and the history the phone carries. All for that. And not the 2 MP camera performance.
After this 2007 launch, iPhone became Apple’s most successful product. Forever changing the smartphone industry.
The auctioneer originally expected the phone would be selling at max $30000, but the final value surpassed the expectation fetching the price of $39000.
“We expected the bidding for this item to be fervent and it did not disappoint as a handful of avid and sophisticated collectors drove the price from just over $10,000 on Sunday afternoon to this record-setting amount by Sunday night,” LCG Auctions founder Mark Montero said in a statement.
The base price for the auction was set at $2500.
iPhone certainly are valuable but $39000. This certainly shows the significance Original iPhone carries.
Coming back to present day. The recent iPhone 14 launched has 12 MP main camera, with 128 GB of internal storage. The 14 Pro even bumps this with 48 MP camera and up to 1 TB of storage option.
Apple along with smartphone industry has surely come a long way. There is constant battle over specifications going on in smartphone companies.
