Setting up a home recording studio is a very interesting job for any musician. It is quite different from the professional recording studios. Before starting, its very important that we have some knowledge about any musical instrument.

Basic requirements of a home recording studio :-

  • Special Room
  • PC/Laptop
  • Microphone
  • Audio Interface
  • Keyboard
  • Monitor Speakers
  • Monitor Headphones

Special Room :-

Any recording studio needs to have a special room for recording. Special room means a room with acoustic settings. A room can be made acoustically set by adding some absorbing materials to it, so that the reflected sounds get absorbed and do not interfere with the recorded sound.

PC/Laptop :-

A recorder in this time of advanced technology, has been replaced by pc/laptop. A pc/laptop is a substitute to recorder, mixing console, sampler, etc. PC/laptop in a recording studio is known as Digital Audio Workstation or DAW. Some of the most popular recording softwares used are – Logic Pro, Garage Band, Pro Tools for Apple and Cubase, Nuendo for Windows.

Microphone :- mic yantragyan

Mics are of two types – Dynamic and Condenser. But only condenser microphone are used in recording studios. It yields a very low-noise audio frequency signal. They require a power source, provided by microphone inputs on equipment known as ‘Phantom’ power. Some accessories that are required to make the recording better and for long life of the mic as well, are – shockmount and pop filters.

Audio Interface :audio interface yantragyan

While setting up a recording studio, sound card is the basic requirement which in this field is known as ‘audio interface’. Its an external device, not the one present in our pc/laptop. It connects the inputs like microphones, midi controller to the pc/laptop by overcoming the latency problems and by providing some pre-effects like reverb, flanger, filter, delay, chorus, etc.

Keyboard :-midi controller yantragyan

The ‘keyboard’ used in the recording studios is known as ‘MIDI Controller Keyboard‘ (Musical Instrument Digital Interface). It provides both IN and OUT jacks that support MIDI, ‘the standard way to transfer performance data between electronic musical instruments and computers’. Its an instrument that can replace all the other musical instruments. For instance, if you don’t know, how to play guitar still you can choose guitar in your midi keyboard and can play it using its keys. In the same way you can play drums, flute, tabla, electric/base guitar on it.

Monitor Speakers :- monitor speaker yantragyan

These speakers are quite different from the regular domestically and commercially used speakers as they produce the exact copy of the input sound without any interference. ‘Monitor speakers’  have a relatively flat response rather than producing a sound with base and treble. Studio monitors are made in a more physically robust manner than home hi-fi loudspeakers; whereas home hi-fi loudspeakers often only have to reproduce compressed commercial recordings, studio monitors have to cope with the high volumes and sudden sound bursts that may happen in the studio when playing back unmastered mixes.

Monitor Headphones :-sennheiser hd 280 pro yantragyan

Monitor headphones‘ are much more important than monitor speakers in a home recording studio because there, it is difficult to have a separate room for recording and mastering. Thus, recording in the same room, the sound from the monitor speakers will get back into the microphone causing disturbance and there we can make use of monitor headphones. There working is same as that of monitor speakers.
